Did you know?

There are 16 kinds of honey bees.

Honey bees will fly up to 4 miles to gather food.

A colony of honey bees must fly a combined total of 55 thousand miles, and visit 2 million flowers to produce one pound of honey!

A honey bee queen can lay over 2,000 eggs per day, and can live 3-5 years.

There are over 300 varieties of honey.

Honey will never spoil if kept from moisture.

Pure local honey can provide allergy relief.

Honey products contain antibacterial properties making them excellent to treat cuts and burns with.

Honey bees are responsible for approximately 13.8 million dollars of the U.S. food supply.

About the Book

First Lessons in Beekeeping introduces the prospective beekeeper to the basics of beekeeping through easy-to-understand text and numerous color photos on honey bee biology, beekeeping equipment, management, honey production and processing, as well as disease diagnosis and treatment. In the preface to this book, author Keith Delaplane says of his first book on beekeeping, "Its pages opened to me a golden world of honey bees and beekeeping, and guided my stumbling steps that first spring season. My story is but one of thousands who have passed through the door opened by Dadant's little book."

That "little book" was the 1968 edition of Charles P. Dadant’s 1917 classic First Lessons in Beekeeping. Dadant’s book and its succeeding editions have been America’s first stop for beginning beekeepers for over 90 years. For the latest edition, Delaplane honors the tradition of sticking to the basics, while fully engaging the new realities of beekeeping in the 21st century. This new book is everything you need to know to become a successful beginning beekeeper.

About the Course

First Lessons in Beekeeping is a 7 session introductory course for those interested in honey bees and the art of keeping them. The sessions, taught by experienced local beekeepers, are full of information about practical beekeeping for personal pleasure and profit. Each detailed session is taught to instruct the participant in basic beekeeping techniques and general knowledge. At the end of the course the participants will be given the opportunity to take a written test toward become certified beekeepers in the SC Master Beekeeping Program.
